Football victory
- Posted on April 29 at 10.27 p.m.
Well done to our intermediate footballers on beating HWH-Bunclody in the championship in Bellefield, on a scoreline of 3-7 to 0-8.
On blustery day when good play was difficult if not impossible, Ferns were three points down at the break, but two quick goals from 'Ducker' Hawkins early in the second half turned things around and we held the lead until the end. The icing on the cake was then a good goal from Paul Morris just before the final whistle.
The result means that Ferns and Bannow/Ballymitty (who we drew with in the opening game) are the only unbeaten teams in the group after two rounds of games, and can look forward with hope to the remaining games when the championship resumes later in the year.

Thanks go to all who attended our book and DVD launch in The Courtyard, where we all had a great night. Sincere thanks too to all who have paid compliments on the book and DVD - there was a lot of hard work involved in producing, but we're glad you think it all paid off in the end!
Copies remain available for sale, so please pass on the good word to anybody you know who mightn't have bought yet and who might enjoy them.

The Boys of Wexford

It's not just the senior hurling trio of Paul Morris, James Tonks and Ian Byrne who are making their mark at inter-county level these days, because we also have some underage players who are doing their bit for Wexford.
Peter O'Toole recently played for the under-15 hurling development squad, while Chris Turner is part of the under-14 panel. Well done to them both, and to all others too who put themselves forward for the various development squads.

Membership fees
- Posted on April 10 at 6.44 p.m.
Thanks go to all players who have paid their membership fees in the recent past, while a reminder is sent to others that the 'no pay, no play' rule which team mentors undertook to enforce remains in place. This means that if you have not yet paid your dues, you really should try to do so soon. Similarly, if you have paid off just an instalment, please try not to leave it too long before making another payment.

Walkway open to the public
We're pleased to announce that the walkway around club grounds is now complete, and it's open to everybody (members and non-members alike) to use as a means of getting some fresh air and good exercise.
We remind people however that dogs are not allowed in club grounds, for health and safety reasons. It doesn't matter if you've got the best 'pooper scooper' in the world and every intention of using it - not everybody is as conscientious as you are, and so we can't allow dogs at all. There's also the consideration of somebody maybe being bitten or a playful larger dog knocking over a small child, so for all those health, safety and insurance reasons, we ask you to please leave
the pooch at home when coming to the club grounds.

Here come the championships!

After all the training and practice matches, things are about to get serious for our adult teams, as the county championships are set to begin in the coming weeks.
The intermediate footballers will be first into the fray with a match in Bree this Friday night (April 20) against Bannow/Ballymitty (throw-in 7 p.m.), and then on Sunday April 29 they will take on HWH-Bunclody in Bellefield at 2 p.m.
Meanwhile, details of fixtures for the opening rounds of the hurling championships have just been announced by the County Board.

Our newest member
- Posted on April 12 at 1.36 p.m.
Congratulations go to club chairman Des O'Neill and wife Caroline on the birth last night of a baby boy. Des says he has a hurl and jersey for the little fella already. And he wanted to bring a football in for him today, he says, but apparently a nurse decided it wasn't suitable for a maternity ward.
Little O'Neill thus becomes the club's newest member, thanks to his chairman dad's family membership. We look forward to seeing another generation of O'Neills on the field in years to come.

Young county stars

We had some representatives on Wexford county development squads over Easter weekend, as Ben Cowman was with the under-16 side for matches in Carlow, while Conor Nolan lined out for the under-15s in Kildare.
Both sides won one and lost one, with the under-16s beating Kildare but losing to Carlow, while the under-15s lost to Kildare but had a good win over the Dubs.
Well done to both Ben and Conor, and we wish them well for their future on the county scene. We hope to see some others from Ferns join them in the county scene too!

Cash in - Chairman out!

There were some notable figures on the field when our Junior 'B' hurlers took on Davidstown/Courtnacuddy in the league on Easter Saturday, as the veteran Mylie Cash returned to action by standing into goal for the hour, and our club chairman Des O'Neill spent some time in the thick of things out the field.
Both oul' fellas acquitted themselves fairly well as the sides played out a 1-12 to 2-9 draw, with Davidstown/Courtnacuddy battling back for a share of the spoils only after bringing on some of their 'A' team players for the closing few minutes.
This Junior 'B' team is worth keeping an eye on, by the way - you never know who you might see togged out!

Intermediate Football Championship
- Posted on April 2 at 10.21 p.m.
Details of the opening rounds of the Intermediate Football Championship have been announced by the County Board, and Ferns will have a Friday night start. But that's not the only unusual thing about them, as because of the way the fixtures revolve around county team commitments, we're actually down to play our round two match first!
Hence, Ferns will line up against Bannow/Ballymitty in the opening game, to be played in Bree at 7 p.m. on Friday April 20. The second game will then be against HWH-Bunclody in Bellefield at 2 p.m. on Sunday April 29.

No pay - no play
- Posted on April 6 at 5.32 p.m.
All players are asked to note that the March 31 deadline for payment of membership fees has now passed, and if you have not yet paid up, you are not insured or otherwise covered for medical fees if you suffer an injury.
Selectors of all adult teams agreed at a meeting on Thursday night that such players cannot be allowed line out for the club until their fees are up to date, and have undertaken to enforce a strict 'no pay, no play' policy, beginning this weekend.
If you are one of those who has yet to pay, please do so as soon as possible. Just speak to your team manager or contact club registrar Ger Bennett directly.

Our three county men
- Posted on April 2 at 10.24 p.m.
A little bit of history was witnessed in Bellefield on Sunday afternoon, as there were three Ferns St Aidans men on the field at the same time for the Wexford senior side, for the first time in living memory.
Paul Morris (pictured) played the entire game against Laois in the National Hurling League and bagged 2-2 to finish up top scorer from play, while both James Tonks and Ian Byrne were introduced at the break and helped shore up the victory in the second half.
We hope to see all three getting more action for the county team soon - and of course, we hope to see them beat Laois again next week in the all-important relegation play-off!

Youngsters ready to get going
- Posted on April 2 at 10.17 p.m.
Our youngest playing members return to action this week, as training for our under-6 and under-8 squads begins in the field at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening (April 5).
We had some great turn-outs for these sessions last year, and are hopeful of now seeing the same again. Our under-10 squad trains at the same time, so the grounds are sure to be a hive of activity each Thursday for quite some time to come!
All are welcome - just come along on any of those nights. Or if you prefer, you can ring Pádraig Dunbar in advance about the under-6 or under-8 sessions (086-4094067) or George Warren in connection with the under-10s (087-9224740).

Busy under-14 squad
- Posted on April 2 at 10.12 p.m.
Our under-14 squad (pictured above) is certainly having a busy time of it these days. On Saturday last (March 31), they first hosted a group of the Féile Peil Loch Garman, where they took on Craanford, Duffry Rovers, and HWH-Bunclody. Our boys played well in all three matches but unfortunately didn't do well enough to progress from the group, as it was HWH-Bunclody who went on to the semi-finals.
Then that evening, the same group travelled to Castletown for the semi-finals of the indoor hurling tournament there. Perhaps the exertions of the football earlier on caught up with them, but again they were ultimately disappointed, as they lost out to Buffers Alley.
They will be back in hurling action next Saturday, April 7, as they compete in Division 2 of the Slaney Hurling/Féile na nGael tournament. Good luck to all involved.
