Leinster Hurling League
- Updated on April 2 at 10.03 p.m.
It may have been a long journey to Westmeath for our senior hurlers on Saturday, to take on Castlepollard in the Leinster Hurling League, but it proved a profitable one too as our lads stormed to a big win of 4-20 to 1-10.
They were already 4-12 to 1-3 ahead by half-time, and while the scoring rate slowed down a bit in the second half, Ferns were always in control.
'Bitsy' had two of our goals and Paul Morris struck the other two, while another notable feature of the game was the performance of James Tonks at corner back. Tonks even made a special point afterwards of saying how much he enjoyed playing there!
The group stages of the league conclude on Easter Monday with a trip to Laois to play Camross, but unfortunately, Ferns are unlikely to progress to the knock-out stages no matter what the result there. That's because our conquerors in the first match - Naomh Eoin from Carlow - had a 3-17 to 2-16 win over the Laois men on Saturday, and so all they have to do is avoid defeat in a home match to Castlepollard on Monday for them to take the top spot and go through. Still, stranger things have happened...

Can lightning strike for us again?
- Posted on March 23 at 1.44 p.m.
They say that lightning never strikes twice - but it does sometimes, as we saw in last year's Model County Draw, when tickets sold by Ferns St Aidans won the top prize of a brand new car or a cool €13,000 cash not just once, but twice!
We could scoop a top prize again this year - and you'll be in with a chance yourself if you buy one of the tickets which are about to go on sale.
There's lots of other attractive prizes too, including exotic holidays, electrical goods, shopping vouchers, and much more, so overall, there are lots of chances to win.
The Draw remains one of our biggest and most important sources of income for the entire year, so we would be grateful for your support. Teams of ticket sellers will start their rounds of the parish this weekend, and we hope you'll give them a good welcome!

'Road Trip' for the seniors
- Posted on March 27 at 1.38 p.m.
Our senior hurlers face something of a 'road trip; on Saturday (March 31), as they travel all the way to Westmeath to take on Castlepollard in their second match in the Leinster Hurling League.
It's roughly 125 miles from Ferns to there, so they're heading off early, and a bus will pull out of town at 11 a.m. to give them plenty of time to get there and stretch the legs along the way, ahead of a 4 p.m. throw-in. Add in the length of the match and then the time taken for a bit to eat afterwards and the trip home, and it's going to be a long day out!
Incidentally, Castlepollard also lost their first match in the league, as they were beaten by Laois side Camross on a 4-13 to 1-15 scoreline. It effectively means that Saturday's encounter is a real 'do or die' affair, as nothing less than a win will do for either side if they want to keep their hopes alive of progressing to the knock-out stages. We wish our lads the best of luck, and hope the day out is as fruitful as it is long!

Féile Peil
- Updated on March 28 at 2.08 p.m.
The club's under-14 footballers will be in Féile Peil action next Saturday (March 31) on our own grounds, as we host a group that also involves Craanford, HWH-Bunclody, and Duffry Rovers.
Matches will be ten minutes each way, and the action will start at 10.30 a.m. with Ferns taking on Craanford, and the Duffry playing 'The Halfway'. The second round of games (winners v winners and losers v losers) will be at 11.15 a.m., while the final round will be at 12 noon. Play-offs will then be used to decide the group winners, if necessary.
After that, the group winners will make their way to Killurin for semi-final action at 3.30 p.m. against the winners of one of the three other groups being played at other venues around the county on Saturday morning. We hope it's our young lads who'll end up having the long day out, and we wish them the best of luck.
The following Saturday (Easter Saturday, April 7) will then see Ferns in Slaney Hurling (Féile na nGael Loch Garman) action - more details will be posted next week.

Our under-12 hurlers had a great win over Crossabeg Ballymurn in the Rathnure 9-a-side indoor tournament on Sunday morning. This was a cracking game with Ferns 10-5 to 6-6 ahead at half-time, with Steve Warren shooting six of thosee goals. However Crossabeg came back strongly in the second half and got four points ahead but Ferns then got two goals right at the finish. Ben Bernie Snr. was in charge this week and was certainly busy, juggling his panel of 18 eager players to great effect. Everyone played their part. Well done all.

Congratulations to the under-12 hurlers who won the ‘B’ final of the Liam Mellows/ Castletown indoor hurling tournament on Friday night, March 16. The tournament was played over three nights and in the semi-final we beat Arklow Rocks by 1-0 to 0-0. Evan Ryan got the important goal but there was some heroic defending from everyone towards the end.
This brought us into the final where we were up against St. Patrick’s of Wicklow. This was an exciting game where we got an early goal from Glen Williams. However we were 2-0 to 1-0 down coming near the end when Steve Warren got on the end of a James Lawlor clearance to level things up. Then right at the death, Tommy Earle got first to a breaking ball, picked it and struck it to the back of the net. The whistle sounded to great excitement from the Ferns players. After the match James Lawlor received the Cup.
Goals win games but it is important to recognise the work of the four backs namely Jordan Kirwan, Robert Murphy, Michael O Brien and Shane Breen who defended superbly in the two matches. On the night we were unfortunately short a few players but the players that all played their part and really did great were James Lawlor, Michael O Brien, Robert Murphy, Shane Breen, Jordan Kirwan, Steve Warren, Evan Ryan, Tom Browne, Sebastian Rynhart, Kevin Stafford, Tommy Earle and Glen Williams. It all means a winning start for the 2012 Bainisteoir Ben Bernie Jnr - well done Ben!
Also many thanks to Liam Mellows/Castletown for their hospitality and great credit is due to them for the very smooth running of this tournament.

Weekend report
- Posted on March 25 at 7.53 p.m.
Our senior hurlers made it two wins from two in the All County League on Sunday evening (March 25), as they beat the Rapparees by 2-16 to 2-6.
The game was tight enough for the first half at scores were level at the break (1-6 to 2-3), but Ferns took control after the interval and ran out deserved winners. The bulk of the scores came from Tommy Dwyer and John Breen, who contributed 1-11 between them: Dwyer shooting 0-7 (including three from frees and two from 65s), and 'Beaner' contributing 1-4 from play. The other scores came from Bitsy O'Connor (1-2), Benny Jordan (0-1), Johnny Dwyer (0-1) and Edward Cullen (0-1 free).
In the curtain raiser, our 'C' team were unlucky to lose to the Rapps' third team on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-10, with a last minute point from a 21-yard free giving the town side the narrow victory.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, our junior hurlers staged a great comeback against Rathnure to salvage a draw from a game that saw them nine points down early in the second half, and still six points down with ten minutes to go. A couple of goals came at the right time, and then 'Cully' drew it level with a pointed free as the game ticked into injury time. That makes it two draws in two matches for the juniors - we hope they win the next one!

Great value season ticket
Wexford County Board is about to make season tickets for this year's adult club championships available, and we think they represent great value at just €100 for all the hurling and football action you can manage in the year.
Think about it - Ferns face at least five matches in the senior hurling championship this year, another five in intermediate football, and a whopping seven in junior hurling - so if you guess a tenner a go for all those matches, the season ticket would soon pay for itself if you go out regularly to support our teams. And that's without even considering how you could also go see any other championship match all year long, up to and including the county finals.
Full details on how and where to buy the tickets are to be announced soon, but in the meantime, we think it's well worth considering. They're not valid for Coiste na nOg matches, camogie, or ladies football, but could be great value all the same if you're the sort who attends lots of matches. And great value is always great to get!

Two wins, one defeat and a draw...
St Patrick's weekend was a busy time for our adult hurling teams, with no fewer than four matches taking place between the three sides.
The seniors got things under way on Friday night (March 16) away to Cloughbawn in a match played under floodlights, and they had a good win by 1-18 to 3-5. They were then back in action on Bank Holiday Monday, this time against Carlow side Naomh Eoin in the Leinster League, but things didn't go so well this time and they fell to a 2-13 to 1-14 defeat.
Meanwhile, the juniors began their league campaign at home to Faythe Harriers on Monday morning and snatched a draw thanks to two late goals from Derek Thorpe and Jamie Dunbar. Finally, the junior 'B' team were also in action, away to Oylegate/Glenbrien, where they won by 2-9 to 2-6.
All teams are back in action next weekend - see fixtures for details.

Boxing champion
Congratulations to clubman Johnny Dwyer, who became an All-Ireland boxing champion on Friday night (March 16) when triumphing in the 71kg category of the National Novices Championship in The National Stadium, Dublin.
Johnny was then back in hurling action on Monday when he came on for the seniors in the Leinster League match against Naomh Eoin of Carlow, and is expected to train with our lads this week - at least the venue of the boxing club will suit!

Another busy weekend ahead
- Posted on March 21 at 5.54 p.m.
There's another busy weekend of hurling action ahead, as again, all three of our adult sides will be in action in the All County Leagues.
This time, the juniors will be first into the fray, as they are away to Rathnure's 'C' team at 3.30 p.m. on Saturday. Then on Sunday, there's a double-header against the Rapps on our own grounds. The curtain-raiser will be provided by our third team against their thirds, with throw-in there at 4.30 p.m., and the seniors will line up against each other at 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, there's football action this weekend too, as our minors make the trip to play the Sarsfields at Pairc Charman in Wexford at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Our lads lost their opening game, so they will be hoping to make amends this time.
As always, we wish all our sides the best of luck.

In intermediate football, Ferns are in Group B with HWH-Bunclody, St Mary's (Rosslare), Bannow/Ballymitty, Kilanerin 'B', and Craanford. The first game will be against HWH-Bunclody on the weekend of April 14.

Come run with us!
We're hoping to enter some Ferns teams in the 5k run being hosted in Enniscorthy by the Shamrocks club on the morning of St Patrick's Day, so if you're interested in taking part, please give co-ordinator John Tonks a call at (086) 2499599.
Now that the seniors are hurling on Friday night rather than Saturday afternoon, some of them might fancy a bit of a run the morning after to loosen up a bit, while the invitation is open to everybody else too who would like to come out for a trot around the town.
It promises to be a bit of craic, and with an 11 a.m. start, you'll still have most of the day to enjoy afterwards as well. JT is waiting to take your call - so go on, give him a shout!

Inter-county scene
James Tonks has been picked in the starting 15 for Wexford in the National Hurling League tie against Limerick in Wexford Park this Sunday (March 18), in one of seven changes to the team that came back from the dead to beat Offaly last Sunday. Paul Morris is again named on the bench, and will be hoping for the chance to add to the scores he got after being introduced against Antrim in the league opener.
It'll be a busy day in the park, with the Wexford footballers taking on Roscommon too in the first leg of a double-header...there would be worse ways to spend the day, so why not go along to see the action?

Weekend hurling fixtures
The All County Hurling League gets under way this weekend, and we have three teams in action.
The seniors will play away to Clougbawn at 8 p.m. on Friday evening in a floodlit encounter under the Cloughbawn lights, while the Juniors now have St Patrick's Day off as their match against Faythe Harriers 'B' has been put back to Monday March 19, with a throw-in at our own grounds at 11 a.m. Meanwhile, the Junior 'B' team will be away to Oylegate/Glenbrien 'C' at 4.30 p.m. that day, while our seniors will be back in action on Monday with a match at home against Naomh Eoin of Carlow in the Leinster Hurling League (throw-in 4 p.m.).
The minor hurling campaign also opens this weekend, with the Ferns lads making the short trip up the road to play St Patrick's at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning (March 18).

Wexford v Offaly
Well done to James Tonks, who was introduced off the bench for Wexford in the National Hurling League match today (Sunday March 11) against Offaly. He helped to shore up the defence and played his part in what turned out to be a heroic comeback and memorable victory. Hopefully there'll be another win next week against Limerick, and hopefully both James and Paul Morris will get some game time again.
All County Hurling League
There's a St Patrick's Day start to the All County Hurling League for both our senior and junior hurlers, according to the fixtures just released by the competition organisers.
Our seniors are down to play away to Cloughbawn at 2 p.m. that day, while the juniors are fixed to play at home to Faythe Harriers 'B' at 4.30 p.m.
The seniors are operating in Division 1A this year, alongside Oulart/The Ballagh, Rathnure, Rapparees and Buffers Alley as well as Cloughbawn. Meanwhile, the juniors are in Division 4A, where they are joined by Faythe Harriers 'B', Rathnure 'C', Rapparees 'B', Shelmaliers 'B' and either Duffry Rovers 'B' or Geraldine O'Hanrahans, depending (we think!) on the result of a play-off between those sides.
Details of the first two rounds of fixtures can be found on our adult fixtures page.

Football League opener
Fixtures for the opening round of the All County Football League have just been announced, with Ferns Saint Aidans down to play away to HWH-Bunclody at 2 p.m. on Saturday March 10. We're in Division 2B of the league this year, and the other teams there are Kilrush, Starlights, Kilanerin 'B', and Craanford.
'The Halfway', Kilanerin 'B' and Craanford all also feature in our intermediate football championship group, so maybe there'll be a few pointers along the way in the league campaign.

Wexford v Offaly
James Tonks and Paul Morris have both been named on the bench for Wexford's Allianz National Hurling League match against Offaly in Wexford Park this Sunday (March 11) at 2.30 p.m.
We hope they both get a good run-out and also that Wexford put the disappointing result against Antrim behind them and are good enough to claim their first win of the league season. Best of luck to all concerned.
