We had probably our youngest ever Lotto Lucky Dip winner last night, as Tomás Quinn (son of Edel & TJ, and just a few months old) was one of the lucky four. Other winners were Marian Maguire (Ballinakill), Martina Murphy (Milltown), and Pádraig & James Kinsella (Kilbora).
The jackpot wasn't won though, as nobody matched the numbers 14, 22, 27 and 31. This means the top prize is now up to €15,400 for the next draw, to be held in The Courtyard on Tuesday February 7. You can buy your tickets online by clicking here.
The combined Wexford Schools team - with five Ferns players on the panel - will be in action in the Centre of Excellence tomorrow (Saturday) at 2 p.m., as they take on Dublin North Colleges.
They had a big win by 12-17 to 1-4 over Westmeath last week, but things will be a lot tougher here, and it is hoped to see a big crowd there to cheer on the Ferns lads and the other Wexford players. Admission is free.
The five Ferns players involved are James Lawlor (who played in goal last week), Chris Turner (who played at full forward and scored 4-4, including 4-2 from play), Paddy O'Hagan, Conor Scallan, and Eoin Murphy. Best of luck to them all!
Numbers drawn in the Lotto last night were 10, 21, 29, and 30, and there was no jackpot winner.
This means the jackpot now increases to €15,100 for the next draw, to be held in Sinnott's of Bunclody on Tuesday January 24. Tickets will be on sale from this evening (Wednesday) from all the usual sources.
Lucky Dip winners last night were Martina Kinsella, Liam Stovlin, Paddy Skelton, and Anne Marie Higgins.
Congrats to Paul Morris for helping Wexford get off to a winning start in their first competitive match under new boss, Davy Fitzgerald.
Paul struck 1-2 in the Walsh Cup opening round tie in Gorey against an understrength UCD team, as Wexford ran out easy winners by 5-31 to 1-8.
There'll be tougher tests ahead, but hopefully Paul finding the net will be the start of something that will continue throughout the year - for Ferns as well as for Wexford!
The Wexford County Board is this year again offering to part-fund Summer Scholarships to the Gaeltacht for young GAA aged between 14 and 18 years of age. Anybody interested in applying is asked to contact Mag O'Leary-Doyle as soon as possible, but no later than Wednesday February 1.
The following details of the scheme are as supplied by the County Board -
As in previous years, Wexford GAA will part-fund 14 scholarships for club members between the ages of 14 – 18 to attend a 3-week residential Gaeltacht course in the Connemara Gaeltacht. We have negotiated a reduced rate for 14 Wexford GAA students and the scheme is based on the player, the player’s Club and Wexford GAA paying one-third each of the total cost. The course is designed to improve students’ fluency and develop their understanding of Irish in a fun and educational environment. The courses are fully accredited by the Department of Education and by Roinn na Gaeltachta. We have negotiated a discounted rate of €730 / student which means that the player and the Club will pay €243 each and Coiste na nÓg Loch Garman will pay €244. A combined payment from the player and his / her Club must be paid to Coiste na nÓg Loch Garman in the Spring, precise date to be confirmed.
The course will take place in Coláiste Cholumba, An Cheathrú Rua, Conamara,Co. na Gaillimhe for 3 weeks from 27 June to 18 July.
Each Club may nominate no more than 2 players and it is important that players and parents (plus mentors) be advised of this opportunity. Applicants must be paid-up members of their club.
In previous years we have drawn 7 Clubs, each sending 2 players, but in the event that interest levels in the scheme are particularly high this year you are asked to number your applicants 1 and 2 (perhaps on the basis of a draw in your Club) in case it is decided to select one player per Club. A draw will be held at the February County Board meeting and priority will be given to Clubs who were not successful in the 2016 scholarship draw.
- Age Bracket: 14-18 years of age.
- Total Cost: €730 per Player (split into three parts - €243 each for player and club and €244 from Coiste na nÓg.)
- This significantly discounted price is only available to us if a full 14 students attend the summer course.
- Please submit names and dates of birth (max. 2 names per Club) by 3 Feb., 2017
- For further details please log on to www.colaistecholumba.ie
