We suffered a dreadfully disappointing finish to the Senior Hurling Championship campaign when Oulart/The Ballagh beat our lads by 6-26 to 1-16 in Bellefield yesterday evening - that's a whopping 25-point margin.
People wondered afterwards when was the last time a Ferns team suffered a championship defeat so bad. The answer is that it hasn't happened since 1980.
Buffers Alley were the victors that time, as they beat Ferns by 6-14 to 0-5 in the quarter finals that year, for a winning margin of 27 points.
The only other two defeats that came close to that size since then were to Cloughbawn by 6-15 to 2-8 (19 points) in 1987, and to Oulart/The Ballagh by 6-14 to 3-2 (21 points) in 1992.
We hope it's equally long before we see it happen again. In fact, we hope it never happens again.
