Our Juvenile footballers had a successful start to their competitive season with a narrow but deserved win over Cloughbawn this week.
On a heavy pitch, where hopping the ball was not possible, Ferns opened up a 1-2 to 0-0 half-time lead. The goal came from James Lawlor, who also scored five points during the game.
The work was far from done however, as they had to play uphill in the second half with legs tiring in the conditions, and had lost Ciarán Murphy to a black card. They kept the scoreboard ticking over, with scores from sub Joey McHale and Lawlor, but Cloughbawn clawed their way back to level, before an outstanding Lawlor free from near the touchline opened up a lead, which he doubled before the end from play. The final score was 1-7 to 1-5.
In an outstanding team effort, Niall Murphy and Adrian Breen stood out in the half-back line. The team now host Realt na Mara on Monday evening (18 April) in Ferns. Come on up and support them, throw in is at 6.45pm.
