ST. PATRICK'S are making a move at the right time in Group B of the Kavanagh Meats Junior hurling championship, after their 0-18 to 3-5 success against Ferns St. Aidan's in Farmleigh on Saturday secured them second spot and a bye into the last eight.
In what effectively turned into a head-to-head match-up for the right to put the legs up for next weekend, the Camolin-based club were given a bit of a scare by a Ferns side with a propensity for getting in for goals but they eventually took the spoils.
John Doyle and Paul McDonald had points on the board before Seán Walsh got in for the opening Ferns goal.
They didn't panic when the scores didn't come quickly, eventually going in at the interval 1-3 to 0-4 down.
Despite getting back on terms through Doyle and Tomás Morris, St. Pat's were hit with another blow when Walsh scored his second major.
Paul McDonald got the levelling score (2-4 to 0-10) with eleven minutes left, with Doyle, Alan Murphy, Glen Carton, Fergal Murphy and Conor O'Leary pushing their side ahead.
John Breen got a last-gasp goal for Ferns but they were a little short of St. Patrick's and will now face a preliminary quarter-final against Shamrocks after finishing in fourth spot in the table.
September 11, preliminary quarter-final: Shamrocks 3-12, Ferns St. Aidans 1-10
THE UNWANTED tag of being the first team eliminated across the top five grades of championship hurling was bestowed on the Ferns St. Aidans second-string by strong-starting Shamrocks in a bitterly cold Samaritans St. Patrick's Park, Enniscorthy on Thursday.
Knockout action finally commenced with this Kavanagh Meats Junior preliminary quarter-final, and the Templeshannon men did a lot of the hard work in the opening half as they shot into a 3-6 to 0-2 interval lead.
Ferns rallied with the elements behind them on the restart, but they couldn't get any closer than six points as a Shamrocks side that featured the father and son combination of Anthony and Aaron Wallace in the half-back line secured safe passage into the last eight.
The experienced Seán 'Tutsy' Wildes was in sharpshooting form from the off, converting a free after 36 seconds before good work by Ciarán Joyce in the right corner teed him up for a second-minute goal.
The floodlights were switched on in the tenth minute and that seemed to spark Ferns into life, with Niall Logan getting them off the mark just 20 seconds later.
However, Wildes was about to pounce for a second time, flicking to the net for a 2-1 to 0-1 lead in the 13th minute after a point-scoring attempt by captain Podge Doyle came back off the post and Ciarán Joyce initially helped it on.
Although they didn't turn all of their possession into scores, Shamrocks still held sway as Wildes struck a beautiful over-the-shoulder point before impressive midfielder Shane Larkin posted the first of his three scores.
And it was 3-3 to 0-1 after 24 minutes, with Ciarán Joyce cleverly allowing a John O'Connor pass down the left flank to run in behind him before he gathered possession and bolted away to beat Michael Walsh at his near post.
The impressive Niall Logan managed a brief respite with his second point, but Shamrocks finished on a high with replies from Larkin, Wildes (free) and Diarmuid Cullen to lead by 3-6 to 0-2 at the break.
Ferns, who had opted to face the wind first after winning the toss, resumed brightly when Logan - now at midfield with Liam Byrne - maintained his position as their sole scorer with a third point after 25 seconds.
And when Seán Walsh - introduced at half-time - shot low to the net in the 38th minute and then added a series of points from frees, there was still a slight glimmer of hope for Ferns as they had the gap down to 3-8 to 1-7 entering the last quarter.
Veteran James Tonks initiated a lot of attacks from the middle third as they grew into the game, but Shamrocks - who will now play St. Patrick's - were very well served in the full-back sector where Brandon O'Connor and Barry Dobbs were dominant figures.
A lovely first-time pick and point from Diarmuid Cullen made it 3-10 to 1-8 in the 53rd minute and, although Seán Walsh (free) and Liam Byrne narrowed the margin to six, the Enniscorthy town men added the two closing scores courtesy of Ciarán Joyce and substitute Harry Goff.
