September 12, Preliminary quarter-final: Naomh Éanna 1-17, Ferns St. Aidans 1-11
A SUPER Saturday was completed for Naomh Éanna with victory over Ferns St. Aidans in Monamolin to reach the last eight of the Kavanagh Meats Junior hurling championship at the expense of Ferns St. Aidans.
The Gorey club already had success in the Gorey District Junior 'B' final and their Under-14 Division 2 semi-final under their belts coming into the evening throw-in, and they dominated this clash to make it a perfect trio of successes.
While the lads in green and white deserved their win, and with eight different scorers to their opponent's four they had more potential to push on, there was a spell midway through the second period when Ferns threatened to rally.
They had just got within five (0-14 to 0-9) in the 39th minute and Gorey's play became a little frayed.
They gave poor balls into the goalmouth a few times, hit a couple of wides and generally just lost the momentum for ten minutes.
Critically, during the dry spell, Gearóid Cullen nailed a free from his own '65 to add a handy point.
In the meantime Ferns created several scoring chances but failed to take any of them. None were easy but all were possible as their chance to build momentum slipped away.
Gorey were aided by a light breeze in the opening half and never trailed. Cullen struck five of their opening six points, with Eoin McGuckin also on the scoresheet, as they bettered replies from Stephen O'Toole and James Kinsella to lead by 0-6 to 0-2.
Apart from a solitary Ryan Nolan effort early in the second-half, only Benny Jordan would score for Ferns after the 11th minute.
He added four frees before the interval to counter scores from Darragh Levingston, Cullen, Shane Flood and Seán Óg Whelan (0-10 to 0-6).
Gorey's strong start to the second-half, with James Kenny adding his name to the list of marksmen, eased them seven up.
Ferns got within five before the dead spell in the middle of the period, which was broken by the victors scoring three of the next four, including a James McGraynor effort, to move 0-17 to 0-10 in front.
Ferns appeared to grab a lifeline when Jordan bashed a low 20 metres free past a five-man goal-line but Tom Wheatley responded with a clinical finish to the net in the next Naomh Éanna attack to nip any potential revival in the bud and send his side into the last-eight clash with Shamrocks.
