June 27: Oylegate-Glenbrien 1-14, Ferns St. Aidans 1-13
CIARÁN HOURIHANE and Damien Reck combined to prevent Charlie Roark conjuring a potentially decisive injury-time goal for Ferns St. Aidans in Bree on Saturday, and Oylegate-Glenbrien would have had serious trouble coming to terms with losing this one after absolutely lording the second-half of the rain-lashed first round Pettitt's Senior hurling championship Group B clash.
A fortuitous 13th-minute Corey Byrne-Dunbar goal - his long-range free flying all the way to the country-end net - gave Ferns a slight 1-8 to 0-9 edge after a first-half when, amid the extremely difficult playing conditions, it was a case of all hands to the pumps.
But the second-half was all about Oylegate-Glenbrien as they sought a first championship win over Ferns in three attempts.
Jack Nolan, on his debut at this level, was a magnificent force for the blues together with the Rowley brothers - Peter from wing-back, and Seán up front - as the beaten 2023 finalists had all the momentum following the interval.
But manager M.J. Reck - back at the helm after his fruitful tenure of Davidstown-Courtnacuddy - and company grew increasingly frustrated as their charges flashed wide after wide, with six alone and another shot dropped short before Joe Dunne eventually opened their second-half account with a 39th-minute point to peg it back to 1-9 to 0-10.

A FORTUITOUS 57th-minute Gavin Bailey goal crowned a raucous second-half fightback by Ferns St. Aidans to extend their new-found Pettitt's Senior hurling championship supremacy over Oulart-The Ballagh with Sunday's sun-scorched second round Group B grind in McCauley Park, Bellefield.
Oulart-The Ballagh, with benefit of the gentle breeze, illustrated real potential when blasting 0-8 to 0-2 clear after 17 minutes. And they maintained the whip-hand at half-time (12-9) and at 14-12 eight minutes into the second-half.
But a previously uninspiring Ferns began to rock and roll from there, restoring parity after 45 minutes for the first time since the eighth minute (15-15), before Brian Stafford gathered from Rory Scallan to arrow over the lead score from his own half on 48 minutes.
The 2022 champions kept their noses in front from there, but a stroke of enormous luck guarded them against being toppled by Oulart-The Ballagh's ferocious late efforts.
Indeed, while Bailey is usually good for a point or two in his principal brief of helping to shore up things at the back, he struck big on this occasion as he lent his influence from midfield.
After Oulart-The Ballagh were foiled in a goaling bid at the scoreboard end, the clearance found Bailey to the right of midfield.
He let rip with a delivery-cum-scoring attempt. But his missile dropped sharply, eluding the 'keeper as it went all the way to the net for a massive 1-21 to 0-18 boost.
Oulart-The Ballagh battled to salvage something, but they created nothing after Simon Roche had lodged a close-range free to the net 68 seconds into added-time.
Instead, Charlie Roark made a block on a Billy Dunne effort out on the left wing. While the ball still spun into Ferns territory, Bailey was there to ship it back up the line for Roark to clinch a three-point victory.
And that was one of a bunch of key blocks by Ferns during the closing quarter - Patrick Breen and Ian Byrne among the others to quell the opposition - as they resolutely made it three wins on the spin since their first-ever triumph at this level over Oulart-The Ballagh in a 2023 group encounter.
This latest victory was a fine response to having been tamed in the second-half in defeat to Oylegate-Glenbrien a week earlier, while Oulart-The Ballagh already had a win in the bag against Rapparees.
The sides shared four points in this first meeting since a 2024 fifth round clash, before Oulart-The Ballagh took an 0-8 to 0-2 hold with the aid of braces from Billy Dunne, defender Conor Blake and Adam McRedmond.
Although struggling early on, Ferns generated a couple of promising goaling chances during that time, with Eoin Murphy and Roark drawing fine saves after 13 and 16 minutes respectively.
Corey Byrne-Dunbar bridged a gap to Ferns' second point after seven minutes with their third on 18, cutting the gap to 0-8 to 0-3.
Oulart-The Ballagh then generated a serious goaling threat, with sweeper Simon Roche's long delivery finding Oisín Moore only for the defender's bid to culminate in a tame effort.
But Rory Jacob's men created another chance on 25 minutes, with Murtha Doyle and Kian O'Connor working the ball in from the right endline. O'Connor crossed to substitute Rhys Wickham, only for 'keeper Jonny Dwyer to produce a masterly save.
While scores at the other end from Gavin Bailey, Chris Turner and a Corey Byrne-Dunbar free gave Ferns renewed oxygen, Oulart-The Ballagh went in with a 12-8 lead as Simon Roche sent over from long-range, before Billy Dunne played a one-two from a line ball with Darryl Gray before Dunne lift-and-struck over seconds later for a cracking score to end the first-half.
But they were overwhelmed by Ferns' decisive second-half push, with coach Declan Browne savouring a real high in his temporary management of the side as Pat Bennett now returns following a two-game exclusion from the sideline.

DESPITE FIRING an eye-watering 13 first-half wides, Glynn-Barntown delivered a merited first victory in Group B of the Pettitt's Senior hurling championship with a compelling second-half showing against Ferns St. Aidans in Samaritans St. Patrick's Park on Saturday.
Regardless of their early squander-mania, the Killurin-based outfit led by 1-9 to 1-7 at half-time, before captain Matthew Joyce led their closing-half charge to a first group-stage victory since last year's opening game against Oulart-The Ballagh.
And it represents added satisfaction for Glynn-Barntown after they had also suffered a pair of setbacks in their first two Senior football fixtures in recent weeks.
Ferns St. Aidans were left counting the cost of three squandered goaling chances - two in the opening period - as Pat Bennett's charges struggled to really land a punch on their rivals during the second period.
Indeed, the winners' lead never dropped below four points after they reeled off five without reply between the 39th and 46th minutes in response to Gavin Bailey drawing the sides level for the fourth and, as it proved, last time after 38 minutes (1-11 apiece).
Glynn-Barntown connections were no doubt dismayed as their men, with the blustery wind favouring them, launched four wides before Corey Byrne-Dunbar pointed Ferns off the mark after five minutes.

JUST WHEN Rapparees appeared to be stealing a march, Gavin Bailey burst through for his second goal of the campaign to change the momentum of Friday's high-stakes Pettitt's Senior hurling championship Group B fourth round clash in Farmleigh.
Captain Kevin Foley was immense for the Enniscorthy men, covering vast swathes of sun-scorched grass, and forcing several frees.
That included a brace converted by ever-promising newcomer Jack Leacy, who also obliged from play together with Aaron Dobbs in an uninterrupted four-point sequence between the 34th and 38th minutes as Rapparees stretched clear by 1-12 to 0-10.
But their charge was cooled two minutes later as, with Charlie Roark having pegged back a point, midfielder Bailey crashed through on to a pass from Chris Turner to find the net and shave the gap to 1-12 to 1-11, before Pat Bennett's charges gained their first taste of the lead after 42 minutes as free-taker Corey Byrne-Dunbar and Turner followed with points.
Although riveting, the game was short on quality, something perfectly reflected in the 34 overall wides together with several other shots dropping short.
Indeed, neither side could pull clear as they shared the next six points, before Jack Leacy ultimately prevented Corey Byrne-Dunbar from earning Ferns their fourth successive championship win over the Rapps when posting a free earned by man of the match Foley six minutes into added-time.
A second win of the summer for either side was considered crucial in their efforts to put the threat of relegation in the rear-view mirror and boost prospects of landing one of the two direct tickets to the quarter-finals.
This outcome piles on the pressure in that regard, with Rapparees facing a massive duel with Oylegate-Glenbrien, and Ferns a sizeable task against Rathnure in the closing round.
And this outing doesn't really offer encouragement for either side's prospects with their displays being quite patchy, with both clearly some way shy of the quality which saw Rapparees immediately precede Ferns as county champions in 2021.
There is a wealth of promising first-year adults dotted across both line-outs, and Seán Hyland continued to catch the eye for Rapparees, including with his first goal at this level.
That came when the midfielder cracked the ice in some style two minutes in after gathering an Aaron Dobbs handpass and powering home despite Ferns 'keeper Jonny Dwyer getting some timber to that drive.

Indeed, while Bailey is usually good for a point or two in his principal brief of helping to shore up things at the back, he struck big on this occasion as he lent his influence from midfield.
After Oulart-The Ballagh were foiled in a goaling bid at the scoreboard end, the clearance found Bailey to the right of midfield.
He let rip with a delivery-cum-scoring attempt. But his missile dropped sharply, eluding the 'keeper as it went all the way to the net for a massive 1-21 to 0-18 boost.
Oulart-The Ballagh battled to salvage something, but they created nothing after Simon Roche had lodged a close-range free to the net 68 seconds into added-time.
Instead, Charlie Roark made a block on a Billy Dunne effort out on the left wing. While the ball still spun into Ferns territory, Bailey was there to ship it back up the line for Roark to clinch a three-point victory.
And that was one of a bunch of key blocks by Ferns during the closing quarter - Patrick Breen and Ian Byrne among the others to quell the opposition - as they resolutely made it three wins on the spin since their first-ever triumph at this level over Oulart-The Ballagh in a 2023 group encounter.
This latest victory was a fine response to having been tamed in the second-half in defeat to Oylegate-Glenbrien a week earlier, while Oulart-The Ballagh already had a win in the bag against Rapparees.
The sides shared four points in this first meeting since a 2024 fifth round clash, before Oulart-The Ballagh took an 0-8 to 0-2 hold with the aid of braces from Billy Dunne, defender Conor Blake and Adam McRedmond.
Although struggling early on, Ferns generated a couple of promising goaling chances during that time, with Eoin Murphy and Roark drawing fine saves after 13 and 16 minutes respectively.
Corey Byrne-Dunbar bridged a gap to Ferns' second point after seven minutes with their third on 18, cutting the gap to 0-8 to 0-3.
Oulart-The Ballagh then generated a serious goaling threat, with sweeper Simon Roche's long delivery finding Oisín Moore only for the defender's bid to culminate in a tame effort.
But Rory Jacob's men created another chance on 25 minutes, with Murtha Doyle and Kian O'Connor working the ball in from the right endline. O'Connor crossed to substitute Rhys Wickham, only for 'keeper Jonny Dwyer to produce a masterly save.
While scores at the other end from Gavin Bailey, Chris Turner and a Corey Byrne-Dunbar free gave Ferns renewed oxygen, Oulart-The Ballagh went in with a 12-8 lead as Simon Roche sent over from long-range, before Billy Dunne played a one-two from a line ball with Darryl Gray before Dunne lift-and-struck over seconds later for a cracking score to end the first-half.
But they were overwhelmed by Ferns' decisive second-half push, with coach Declan Browne savouring a real high in his temporary management of the side as Pat Bennett now returns following a two-game exclusion from the sideline.

July 25: Glynn-Barntown 1-21, Ferns St. Aidans 1-16
DESPITE FIRING an eye-watering 13 first-half wides, Glynn-Barntown delivered a merited first victory in Group B of the Pettitt's Senior hurling championship with a compelling second-half showing against Ferns St. Aidans in Samaritans St. Patrick's Park on Saturday.
Regardless of their early squander-mania, the Killurin-based outfit led by 1-9 to 1-7 at half-time, before captain Matthew Joyce led their closing-half charge to a first group-stage victory since last year's opening game against Oulart-The Ballagh.
And it represents added satisfaction for Glynn-Barntown after they had also suffered a pair of setbacks in their first two Senior football fixtures in recent weeks.
Ferns St. Aidans were left counting the cost of three squandered goaling chances - two in the opening period - as Pat Bennett's charges struggled to really land a punch on their rivals during the second period.
Indeed, the winners' lead never dropped below four points after they reeled off five without reply between the 39th and 46th minutes in response to Gavin Bailey drawing the sides level for the fourth and, as it proved, last time after 38 minutes (1-11 apiece).
Glynn-Barntown connections were no doubt dismayed as their men, with the blustery wind favouring them, launched four wides before Corey Byrne-Dunbar pointed Ferns off the mark after five minutes.
A fifth wide for the winners followed before free-taker Cian Carty ended their misery with a pointed free he forced on seven minutes. But Ferns' hopes of a third successive championship victory over Glynn-Barntown were boosted when Diarmuid Doyle whipped a ground shot to the country-end net in the ninth minute.
Goalie Jonny Dwyer's long puck was latched onto by Gavin Bailey, who played a one-two with captain Paul Morris before Bailey found the scorer with a cross from the left of the square (1-1 to 0-1).
But Ferns messed up a subsequent goaling chance in the 19th minute. Goalie Dwyer's clearance down the right wing found Byrne-Dunbar, but his poorly weighted delivery failed to find Doyle on the right edge of the square, with 'keeper Mark Fanning dashing out to negate the threat and spark a counter-attack which culminated in Liam Cooney pegging it back to 1-3 to 0-4.
Gavin Bailey and John Leacy both got through a mountain of quality work for their respective sides, with Leacy effectively operating as a quarter-back as Bailey ran the Ferns engine from midfield.
The latter fired over on 20 minutes, but that was dwarfed by Glynn-Barntown scores from captain Joyce (two) and teenager Darragh Ryan to force parity after 23 minutes, by which stage the winners had ten of the game's 13 wides.
Corey Byrne-Dunbar nudged Ferns back in front from a '65 after Rory Scallan had threatened.
But Glynn-Barntown fired in front for the first time after 27 minutes with a peach of a goal from Cian Carty. The corner-forward was centrally placed as he collected a line ball from the left by Liam Cooney before intentionally picking his spot in the top left-hand corner of the net to ram home for a 1-7 to 1-5 lead.
Ferns bridged the gap through Ian Byrne and Corey Byrne-Dunbar (free), but responses from John Leacy and Carty edged Glynn-Barntown ahead by 1-9 to 1-7 at the break - only after an outstanding Fanning save three minutes into added-time.
The exciting Byrne-Dunbar saw his delivery drift over the Glynn-Barntown cover and land in the paw of Diarmuid Doyle. He stepped inside an opponent to have the net at his mercy, but Fanning denied him.
And after the sides shared the first six points of the second-half, Glynn-Barntown produced that decisive burst between the 39th and 46th minutes, as substitutes Seán Laffan and Cian Turner together with Colin Carley, Matthew Joyce and Cian Carty (free) generated a 1-16 to 1-11 lead.
With some further strong finishing by Joyce, Mickey Laffan's men maintained a tidy advantage, although Chris Turner went close to giving Ferns a chance with a shot across the face of goal eight seconds into added-time.

JUST WHEN Rapparees appeared to be stealing a march, Gavin Bailey burst through for his second goal of the campaign to change the momentum of Friday's high-stakes Pettitt's Senior hurling championship Group B fourth round clash in Farmleigh.
Captain Kevin Foley was immense for the Enniscorthy men, covering vast swathes of sun-scorched grass, and forcing several frees.
That included a brace converted by ever-promising newcomer Jack Leacy, who also obliged from play together with Aaron Dobbs in an uninterrupted four-point sequence between the 34th and 38th minutes as Rapparees stretched clear by 1-12 to 0-10.
But their charge was cooled two minutes later as, with Charlie Roark having pegged back a point, midfielder Bailey crashed through on to a pass from Chris Turner to find the net and shave the gap to 1-12 to 1-11, before Pat Bennett's charges gained their first taste of the lead after 42 minutes as free-taker Corey Byrne-Dunbar and Turner followed with points.
Although riveting, the game was short on quality, something perfectly reflected in the 34 overall wides together with several other shots dropping short.
Indeed, neither side could pull clear as they shared the next six points, before Jack Leacy ultimately prevented Corey Byrne-Dunbar from earning Ferns their fourth successive championship win over the Rapps when posting a free earned by man of the match Foley six minutes into added-time.
A second win of the summer for either side was considered crucial in their efforts to put the threat of relegation in the rear-view mirror and boost prospects of landing one of the two direct tickets to the quarter-finals.
This outcome piles on the pressure in that regard, with Rapparees facing a massive duel with Oylegate-Glenbrien, and Ferns a sizeable task against Rathnure in the closing round.
And this outing doesn't really offer encouragement for either side's prospects with their displays being quite patchy, with both clearly some way shy of the quality which saw Rapparees immediately precede Ferns as county champions in 2021.
There is a wealth of promising first-year adults dotted across both line-outs, and Seán Hyland continued to catch the eye for Rapparees, including with his first goal at this level.
That came when the midfielder cracked the ice in some style two minutes in after gathering an Aaron Dobbs handpass and powering home despite Ferns 'keeper Jonny Dwyer getting some timber to that drive.
Ferns were frustratingly squandering chances as their wides soared to seven inside the first quarter, at the end of which they trailed by 1-3 to 0-5 on the scoreboard.
The Gorey District men had it down to the minimum on three further occasions during that opening period, and they were desperately close to netting in the 24th minute when Eoin Murphy burst through two defenders before seeing his low strike clawed off the goal-line by mightily relieved netminder Anthony Larkin.
The rare sight of a rain-shower doused the closing stages of the first-half, and after Corey Byrne-Dunbar forced a free which he pointed 72 seconds into the second-half to cut the gap to 1-8 to 0-10, Rapparees, with Kevin Foley simply outstanding, looked set to charge to a first success over this opposition since the 2021 quarter-finals before Gavin Bailey pounced to throw the cat amongst the pigeons.
