Club Wexford Tournament 2011
November 19, semi-final: Ferns St Aidans 6-24, Rapparees 1-9
THIRTY SCORES and a 30-point victory, in just 58 minutes, was the sum of Ferns St. Aidan's Saturday night in Bellefield as they pummelled hosts Rapparees in their opening Club Wexford Senior hurling tournament fixture.
Mercy was called for and given by referee Nicholas Kehoe in the 28th minute of the second-half as the victors embarrassed the Enniscorthy town side with a mid-season type performance.
They started as they intended to go on, grabbing 1-3 in the opening five minutes. Tommy Dwyer had already pointed when Christopher O'Connor broke in behind the Rapparees defence to net.
When the home side hit back in the ninth minute it was through a Seánie O'Gorman goal and the strike eventually helped them to get within two at the end of the opening quarter (1-5 to 1-3).
However, the Rapparees couldn't maintain that scoring rate but their pacey opponents were still only getting going and quicky breezed clear.
Tommy Dwyer drilled a second goal, a penalty, to the net in the 16th minute and, on top of four points from the sublime Paul Morris, it helped Ferns to increase their lead to ten at the break (2-12 to 1-5).
The centre-forward picked up his first goal when firing powerfully to the roof of the net two minutes into the second-half, and two Ian Byrne points saw the lead increase further with 20 minutes to play (3-17 to 1-6).
Another powerful effort by Morris made the gap 19 as the scores continued to fly in and over. Byrne got his goal with eight minutes remaining while first-half ‘keeper and second-half forward, Mick Walsh, also grabbed a score.
Morris wrapped up his hat-trick - his long-range effort was fumbled to the net by Rapps 'keeper Fran O'Gorman - with five minutes remaining, and Nicholas Kehoe finally took pity on the home side, calling it a day with two minutes left and with a chasm between the sides.
Ferns St. Aidans: Mick Walsh (0-1); James Tonks, Seán Murphy; Colin Leacy (0-1), Jamie Whelan, Colm Whelan; Tommy Dwyer (1-7, 0-3 frees, 1-0 pen.), Jonathon Dwyer (0-2); Declan Byrne, Paul Morris (3-8), Ian Byrne (1-2); Patrick Farrell (0-1), Christopher O'Connor (1-2) Subs: Conor Swaine, John Breen, Jamie Dunbar, Niall McLoughlin.
Referee: Nicholas Kehoe (Cloughbawn)
November 26, Final: Buffers Alley 5-10, Ferns St. Aidans 0-14
GOAL-CRAZY Buffers Alley claimed the inaugural Creane & Creane Club Wexford Senior hurling tournament title with a comfortable win over District rivals Ferns St. Aidan's in Bellefield on Saturday evening last.
With both sides coming off straightforward victories in their respective semi-finals the previous weekend, it was hoped that this clash might be the shining light of the Club Wexford series of games, but the Monamolin side were simply too good to let that happen.
Playing with a howling breeze and misty rain at their backs, the Alley put 1-4 on the scoreboard before Tommy Dwyer grabbed Ferns’ opening salvo. Not for the first time it was Keith Burke on target for his side, finishing to the net after a strong, direct run by James Foley.
Scores from Paul Morris and Patrick Farrell helped to narrow the deficit to four by the end of the opening quarter but, just as it looked like they were gaining a foothold, a mistake by Mick Walsh allowed Burke to pull home a second major (2-5 to 0-4).
Ian Byrne and Christopher O'Connor cut the gap to six at the interval (2-7 to 0-7), and they also had a bright start to the second period. Dwyer pointed two '65s to close the gap to four but it could have been better as Johnny Dwyer missed a gilt-edged chance when clean through for a goal that his side really needed.
That profligacy was punished in the 38th minute when Tomás O'Leary pulled home a third goal for the Alley from close range after a scramble.
Ferns stayed in contention for a while, even if it was only due to the placed-ball accuracy of Tommy Dwyer, but Kevin Roche's goal seven minutes from time put paid to any lingering hopes (4-10 to 0-13).
The best goal was still to come, however, and it was provided by Colm Og Doran. The diminutive forward hared down the left and fired an unstoppable shot into the 'postage-stamp' area between post and crossbar as his side rounded off victory and another piece of silverware is now safely stowed away in the cabinet.
Ferns St Aidans: Mick Walsh; James Tonks, Seán Murphy; Declan Byrne, Niall Maguire, Ciarán Roberts; Tommy Dwyer (0-9, 5 frees, 3 '65s), Johnny Dwyer; John Breen, Paul Morris (0-1), Ian Byrne (0-1); Patrick Farrell (0-2), Christopher O'Connor (0-1). SUBS: Conor Swaine, Derek Thorpe, Jamie Dunbar.
