The photo here of the 1963 Rackard League football finalists has generated some interest this week, after Helen Tonks first posted it on Facebook. Tom Dunbar has now had a stab at putting names to all the faces. He's normally fairly good at the picture rounds in a quiz, but if he's not 100% correct here, let us know in the comments and we'll fix things up for him!
Back Row: Cathal Higgins (Teacher), Tom Dunbar, Pat Doran, Michael (Bishop) Nolan, Perie Dunbar, Andy Dwyer, Paddy Doyle, Noel Levingstone, Charlie Brennan, Tony Davitt, Paddy Keyes, Pat Browne, Pat Bolger, Martin O’Connor (Principal) Front Row: Michael Nolan, Pat Hall, Sean O’Brien, Michael Bernie, Tony Dwyer, Angus Kirwan, Malachi Kirwan, Bob Mackey, Michael O’Neill Following on from last week's four nominations for the Club Football Team of the Year 2020, we've now got three nominations for the Hurling Team of the Year too - James Tonks at wing back (showing that there's life in the old dog yet!), Gavin Bailey in midfield, and Paul Morris at wing forward.
Paul is one of just a handful of players to be nominated for both the hurling and football teams. Good luck to them all, and let's hope for a couple of awards to go with all these nominations. Four Ferns men have earned well-deserved nominations for the Wexford Club Football Team of the Year 2020, on foot of our run to last year's Intermediate Final. They are Ivan Meegan in goal; Patrick Breen in midfield; Paul Morris at wing forward, and Ryan Nolan at corner forward.
The awards will take place on Saturday February 27, and will be broadcast live online on Wexford GAA TV. Best of luck to all our four! We've had some people asking recently, so just to confirm that the lights are still turned on in club grounds each evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., to allow people to go walking or running there. We just ask that you please observe social distancing, and take all the other recommended precautions too.
An outline by Jamie Dunbar of the club's Player Pathway Programme, currently in development, wa the highlight of last night's Coiste na nÓg annual meeting. Jamie outlined how he and others are currently working on putting together the document, which is aimed at setting out a "whole of life" approach to how people can be part of the club, from the moment they first come to play hurling and football in the nursery to how they can become involved in coaching and/or administration when their playing days finished.
It's hoped to launch the Programme in the coming months, and it is to be regularly reviewed and updated as the years go on. Coiste Chairman Peter Nolan also spoke at the meeting, to give an outline of hopes and plans for the year ahead. There were almost 40 people in attendance, and the enthusiasm was plain to see. Our Coiste na nÓg annual meeting will take place online next Friday night (January 15th), via Zoom. The starting time will be 7.30 p.m., and we expect things to be wrapped up within an hour or so.
Anyone who wishes to join in can mail Coiste na nÓg chairman, Peter Nolan, to request the meeting log-in details - you can get him at pnolan@pnasurveyors.com We've already got managers lined up for all underage teams for the coming year, but it would be great to hear from parents and other interested in underage matters too. Unfortunately, we’ve had to suspend our lotto again, due to the latest Level 5 restrictions. Anybody who had already bought online for forthcoming draws will have their entries carried over whenever things resume. Let’s hope that won’t be too long!
Happy New Year to all club members, supporters, and all in the community. 2020 has been a tough one, but here's hoping that 2021 is better in all sorts of ways. Stay safe, and remember that we're here to help if anybody needs it during the latest Level 5 restrictions.
As we move into Level 5 restrictions again, we would like to let everyone in the Parish know that just as with previous lockdowns, members of Ferns St. Aidans are available to give a helping hand in any way we can.
If anybody needs assistance, please call Eoin Gethings at 087 9487845. Lotto numbers drawn last night were 9, 12, 13 and 20, and there was no jackpot winner. Lucky Dip winners were Nick Stafford, Ailish Walsh, Anne Marie Logan and Catherine Stafford. The jackpot now rises to €11,100 for our next draw, to be held on January 12th.
