September 24, quarter-final: Kilrush 0-16, Ferns St. Aidans 1-9 (after extra time)
KILRUSH PRODUCED the shock of the FBD Intermediate football championship quarter-finals as they out-pointed Ferns St. Aidan's after extra-time in Bellefield on Saturday last.
Ferns, who had breezed through a group which included Bannow-Ballymitty, were strong favourites coming into the contest but, apart from the opening few minutes, were by and large outplayed by the north county side.
The victors played with aggression and an intensity that their opponents couldn't live with for most of the contest, although they did need an injury time point from Gary Doran to take the game to extra-time.
Before that, points from Patrick Breen and Patrick Codd (two) saw Ferns race into a three-point lead after four minutes. Several other wides came and went and it looked like the game would go to form.
However, Kilrush started to get a foothold in midfield and, in turn, the game as a whole. Shane Tomkins' pair of points tied the game at 0-4 each in the 12th minute and with John Byrne, Frank Boggan and Tomás Hayden also getting on the scoresheet before the break, Kilrush went in at the interval ahead by two (0-7 to 0-5).
In control, Kilrush increased the lead to four by the 46th minute. Ferns, having only scored one point in the previous 29 minutes, grabbed a lifeline when substitute Keith Rynhart latched on to a breaking ball on the edge of the large rectangle and lashed to the corner of the net (0-10 to 1-6).
Patrick Breen equalised with six minutes remaining before Rynhart pointed four minutes later to give Ferns a stunning late lead. Frank Boggan missed a last-minute free to tie the game but the excellent Gary Doran didn't panic when his opportunity to send the game to extra-time came as he pointed from the right (1-8 to 0-11).
Having been given the reprieve, Kilrush pushed on in the extra period. Boggan and Tomkins gave them the lead at the interval of extra-time and a Richie O'Hara double after the resumption helped to ease their side into the semi-final.
