Senior Hurling Championship 2011
April 24: Shelmaliers 2-18, Ferns St. Aidans 0-13
PLAYING WITH real intensity and no little skill throughout the second-half, Shelmaliers were a rejuvenated side as they stormed all over Ferns St. Aidan's to gain a hugely-impressive eleven-point victory in this Pettitt's Senior hurling championship opening round Group A game played at Wexford Park on Sunday evening last.
Shelmaliers must have been quite concerned with their opening to this game, having fallen five points adrift within seven minutes of the start, but more importantly they were playing with little enthusiasm, as it looked as if Ferns were on their way to a comfortable victory.
But this game was turned right around two minutes into first-half additional time. With Ferns still looking comfortable and leading by four points, the Shels broke through fo a goal that seemed to lift the side. After that they completely over-ran Ferns as they powered their way to victory, outscoring their opponents by 1-13 to 0-3 through that second 30 minutes.
It was intense hurling from Ferns during the opening ten minutes as they played the game at an electric pace. James Tonks pointed them in front within two minutes, before midfielder Brendan Jordan launched over two long-range points. Such was their dominance that they added further points through Eddie Cullen (free) and Jonathan Dwyer to lead by 0-5 to nil after seven minutes.
One had to wait until the 17nth minute for the game’s next score, with Shelmaliers eventually opening their account through a neat Brian Doyle point. While Alan Griffith followed almost immediately with a second, Ferns were still left sitting pretty as Christopher O'Connor pointed them 0-6 to 0-2 in front after 20 minutes.
Shelmaliers were struggling to get into the game, as Joe Kelly and Jonathan Dwyer (line ball) exchanged points. A fine Brian Malone surge and point helped to lift the Ferns siege, while ‘keeper Brian Murphy did superbly to keep out what appeared a goalbound shot from Paul Morris. But the Ferns dominance continued as they bounced back with points from Christopher O'Connor and an Eddie Cullen free to lead by 0-9 to 0-4 after 28 minutes.
With the game moving towards additional time, Ciarán O'Shaughnessy pointed from midfield, before Joe Kelly showed power and skill, working his way in along the endline and, despite several tackles, still managing to find the net from an acute angle. Before the break Ferns managed to respond with an Eddie Cullen point that left them leading by 0-10 to 1-5.
Shelmaliers played with far greater intensity on the resumption, hitting the front within four minutes through points from Noel Mythen, Stephen Banville and Joe Kelly. Ferns attacker Ian Byrne used his speed to create space and bring his side back level after 37n minutes, while two minutes later a Christopher O'Connor run brought a point when there was a real goal chance in, leaving them leading by 0-12 to 1-8.
With the Shelmaliers half-back line of Alan Griffith, Conor Walsh and substitute Aidan Cash now taking a real stranglehold on the game, they stormed forward in search of victory. Their intensity was huge, something which Ferns were unable to match, and with points from Stephen Banville and a Joe Kelly free, they edged back in front by 1-10 to 0-12 after 41 minutes.
Shelmaliers had moved up several gears but approaching the end of the third quarter came the crucial breakthrough. A huge delivery from Aidan Cash out of the half-back line dropped tantalisingly under the crossbar, with ‘keeper Michael Walsh letting the ball slip from his fingertips to the net. Now leading by 2-10 to 0-12, Shelmaliers stormed forward for a further eight points in the closing quarter, while restricting their opponents to one.
Ferns St Aidans: Michael Walsh; Darren Davitt, Jamie Whelan, Seán Murphy; Colin Leacy, Tomás Hawkins, James Tonks (0-1); Brendan Jordan (0-2), Jonathan Dwyer (0-3, 1 line ball); John Breen, Paul Morris, Ian Byrne (0-1); Donncha Kinsella, Eddie Cullen (0-3, 2 frees), Christopher O'Connor (0-3). July 16: Rapparees 1-16, Ferns St. Aidans 2-10
Rapparees overturned a seven-point half-time deficit to spring to the top of the Pettit's Senior hurling championship Group A table in Wexford Park on Saturday evening last.A period of 28 second-half minutes without a score proved far too much to overcome for their opponents, Ferns, as they coughed up a lead that would have put them right into contention for a place in the quarter-finals.
Playing against the wind, Rapparees edged into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead after five minutes. Barry Nolan, Ed Tobin and Tomás Mahon all hit the target for the Enniscorthy town side but, with Tommy Dwyer firing well from frees, Ferns quickly drew level. Parity turned to a four-point lead in quick-time as moments after Jonathon Dwyer edged his side ahead, Paul Morris flashed a shot across Fran O'Gorman for the game’s first goal (1-4 to 0-3).
Nolan and Mahon quickly halved the gap, but a spurt of 1-4 in a three-minute spell left Ferns well in the ascendancy. Christopher O'Connor picked off two of those points, but it was Ian Byrne’s long-range effort that evaded the clutches of O'Gorman which did the most damage. Jack Kelly and Eamonn Furlong picked off a couple of late scores to close the gap at the break to eight (2-9 to 0-7), but it still left Rapparees with a mountain to climb in the second-half.
However, Ferns capitulated upon the resumption and didn't score again until Tommy Dwyer drove over a 58th-minute free. Most of the damage was done by the Bellefield club in the first nine minutes of the period. In that spell an eight-point deficit became a two-point lead as Furlong picked up two minors as well as flicking in Declan Ruth's long free for the goal.
Also prominent in that spell was Eoin Quigley, who pointed a brace in a more advanced role, and a lively Tomás Mahon. The fact that only Quigley and Kevin Courtney would add scores for their side in the final 21 minutes would be of little consequence as Brendan Jordan and Ian Byrne both missed goal chances that might have brought Ferns into contention.
Ferns St. Aidans: Edward Cullen; Declan Byrne, Darren Davitt, Seán Murphy; Ciarán Roberts, Tomás Hawkins, Colin Leacy; Brendan Jordan, Tommy Dwyer (0-5, 4 frees); Ian Byrne (1-0), Paul Morris (1-2), Jonathon Dwyer (0-1); Donnacha Kinsella, John Breen, Christopher O'Connor (0-2). Subs: Patrick Farrell for T. Dwyer (temp.), Farrell for J. Dwyer, Thomas Dwyer for Kinsella.

August 21: Cloughbawn 2-16, Ferns St. Aidans 1-18
Noel Carton's 58th-minute point from well inside his own '65, and a fantastic save in injury-time, proved vital as Cloughbawn leaped to the top of Group A of the Pettitt's Senior hurling championship with an exhilarating victory over Ferns St. Aidan's in Bellefield on Sunday last.
The influential shot-stopper strode down to point a long-range free before producing a brilliant reactionary save to deny Edward Cullen a winning goal. It wasn't the first save the former county netminder made with vital stops from Ian Byrne and John Breen proving crucial as his side made the quarter-finals on points difference ahead of Shelmaliers.
The first quarter was nip-and-tuck with points shared unevenly among Brendan Jordan and Tommy Dwyer matching five different scorers for Cloughbawn (0-5 each). The sides remained deadlocked until Kieran Kennedy's ball found its way to Barry Carton who pulled his shot past Ferns stopper Mick Walsh. Jonathon Dwyer and Jordan dragged their side within a solitary point with eight minutes of the half remaining but they wouldn't score again in the first period as Harry and Colm Kehoe send Cloughbawn in a goal ahead (1-9 to 0-9).
The exchange of points continued into the second-half as Cloughbawn led by four in the 42nd minute but a quick-fire 1-1 dragged a battered Ferns level. Tommy Dwyer was provider - his shot was parried away by Carton - but Christopher O'Connor followed up like he's done so often in the past to fire in a crucial goal.
Cloughbawn though are a resolute unit and bounced back in double-quick time. Barry Carton pointed to regain the lead for his side and he quickly turned provider with a mazy run for their second goal as Alan Carton pounced with the perfect finish to the bottom left corner (2-14 to 1-13). However, that wasn't the end of the drama as Ferns, who saw all eight of their starting midfield and forward divisions score, pointed four times in three minutes through Ian Byrne, John Breen, O'Connor and Tommy Dwyer to level with six minutes remaining.
Colm Kehoe raised a white flag to put his side ahead for the fourth time with four minutes to go before Carton made a stunning save to keep out Ian Byrne (2-15 to 1-17), and the late drama would leave one between the sides and Ferns facing a relegation battle.
Ferns St. Aidans: Mick Walsh; Colm Whelan, Jamie Whelan, Seán Murphy; Colin Lacey, James Tonks, Ciarán Roberts; Tommy Dwyer (0-5, 3 frees), Jonathon Dwyer (0-1); John Breen (0-2), Ian Byrne (0-1), Paul Morris (0-3); Brendan Jordan (0-3), Edward Cullen (0-2), Christopher O'Connor (1-1).

September 17, Relegation play-off group: Ferns St. Aidans 5-13, HWH-Bunclody 0-9
Ferns St Aidan's are a relieved squad this week as they got their relegation survival campaign off to a winning start against HWH-Bunclody thanks to a five-goal blitz at Farmleigh.
Both teams still have to play Oylegate-Glenbrien, and while the top-team in the group avoids the drop, the bottom-placed side goes down, while second-placed get one last chance to stay up in a clash with the second-team from the other group comprising Shelmaliers, St. Anne's and Askamore.
Bunclody were missing key player Colm Farrell through injury for Saturday's clash. But three pointed frees from county minor Aidan Nolan meant that they were only in arrears by 0-7 to 0-4 at half-time, although Ferns had failed to reflect their overall dominance where it matters during the first-half.
Ferns took the horse by the reins on the restart, and two goals within the first five minutes from Christopher 'Bitsy' O'Connor and Patrick Farrell blasted them comfortably clear, before John Breen found the Bunclody net midway through the half. Late goals from Ian Byrne and Tommy Dwyer consolidated the spoils for Ferns St Aidans.
Ferns St. Aidans: Michael Walsh; Niall Maguire, Jamie Whelan, Seán Murphy; Colm Whelan, James Tonks, Colin Leacy; Tommy Dwyer (1-1 free), Johnny Dwyer; John Breen (1-0), Paul Morris (0-1), Ian Byrne (1-3); Patrick Farrell (1-1), Eddie Cullen (0-5, 4 frees), Christopher O'Connor (1-2). October 15, Relegation play-off group: Oylegate/Glenbrien 3-9, Ferns St. Aidans 0-13
Oylegate-Glenbrien kept their hopes of maintaining their Senior hurling status alive with a victory over Ferns St. Aidan’s in this relegation game in St. Patrick's Park on Saturday last.
The outcome sees Ferns stay up in Senior ranks next year and newly-promoted HWH-Bunlcody relegated, while Oylegate go into a play-off with Shelmaliers, with the loser also dropping back to Intermediate ranks.
The opening half was tightly-fought with both teams giving nothing away easily. Pádraig Doran and Eoin O'Mahoney opened the scoring for Oylegate, with Paul Morris, John Breen and Eddie Cullen doing the honours for Ferns. Doran added two more before giving Oylegate a four-point lead midway through the half when he sent a penalty crashing to the net. Cullen and Benny Jordan quickly responded for Ferns, but the in-form Doran added two more for his side before a Tommy Dwyer point left a goal between the sides at the break.
The opening quarter of the second-half was the period that proved crucial regarding the outcome of the game. O'Mahoney and Doran added Oylegate's first scores with Dwyer pulling one back for Ferns, before Doran won possession and fired home for his and his side's second goal. Jamie Reck added a point before Doran found the range again with a point to put Oylegate eight up. Cullen and Benny Jordan responded with points for Ferns but Reck was on hand minutes later to grab a third goal for his side midway through the half. This proved to be Oylegate's final score however as Ferns tightened up and gained control of things to finish the half strongly.
Cullen added two more points from frees and Breen and Dwyer added further scores in the closing minutes to leave five points between the sides.
Ferns St. Aidans: Michael Walsh; Niall Maguire, Jamie Whelan, Seán Murphy; Colin Leacy, James Tonks, Colm Whelan; Tommy Dwyer (0-3, 1 free), Jonathon Dwyer; Ian Byrne, Paul Morris (0-1), John Breen (0-2); Christopher O'Connor, Eddie Cullen (0-5 frees), Benny Jordan (0-2).
