Junior 'B' Football Championship 2020
September 27, District Semi-Final: Ferns St. Aidans 4-8, Realt na Mara 1-7
Ferns St. Aidans booked their place in the Enniscorthy Farm Systems Gorey District Junior ‘B’ football championship final with a comfortable win over Réalt na Mara on home soil on Sunday.
Ferns led this game from start to finish, and with four well-taken goals, two in either half, they never really looked in danger at any stage.
However, one could argue that Réalt na Mara never really made the hosts work for their win. With needless red cards for Jordan Redmond and Dylan Sweeney inside the first-half, they ruined their chances in what could have otherwise been a very tightly-contested game.
Ferns, in their familiar surroundings, certainly started stronger. Patrick Skelton, Derek Thorpe and Tomás Hawkins all sailed points over the crossbar before the tenth minute, while Jack Doyle got his side on the board just before the water break.
Sweeney had already been shown the door for dissent at this stage, and Ferns made their extra man count after the short intermission.
Skelton found the top right corner and Jonny Dwyer placed into the bottom left just five minutes apart from one another.
Tony Cleere and Jordan Goff traded points before Brian O’Neill was given his marching orders for Ferns. This briefly levelled the playing field before Réalt na Mara shot themselves in the foot once again, with Redmond also seeing red.
David Doran ended the half with a point for the trailing side who had it all to do after the re-start (2-4 to 0-3).
Ferns quickly put the game to bed after the break. Pat Nolan and Dwyer both rattled the top of the net with two impressive strikes in the opening five minutes of the half.
Kiran Gigi was impressive between the Réalt na Mara posts, and he played an integral role in keeping Ferns’ goal tally down. There was little he could do, however, to prevent four more points before the final whistle through Peter O’Toole, Thorpe and Hawkins
The visiting side staged a mini-revival in the closing stages which left one wondering what might have been. Oisín Willoughby, Liam Rath, Darragh O’Toole and Conor O’Toole all added points, while the latter also finished impressively into the top corner for Réalt na Mara’s only goal.
Ferns St. Aidans: Liam Murphy; Paul Lancaster, Anthony Dwyer, Pat Nolan (1-0); Brian O’Neill, Pádraig Bolger, Barry Breen; Ciarán Roberts, Peter O’Toole (0-1); Jonny Dwyer (2-0), Seán Walsh, Derek Thorpe (0-2); Tony Cleere (0-1), Tomás Hawkins (0-3, 1 ’45), Patrick Skelton (1-1). October 3, District Final: St. Patrick’s 1-8, Ferns St. Aidans 1-7
St. Patrick's staved off a determined Ferns St. Aidans fightback to hold out for the Enniscorthy Farm Systems Gorey District Junior ‘B’ football championship crown at blustery Páirc Uí Shíocháin, Gorey, on Saturday.
Ferns applied considerable pressure during the closing quarter as they pressed strongly to at least force extra-time.
But St. Patrick’s lifted the siege for Tomás Dunne to force a free which Richard Flood pointed four minutes into added time. Tomás Hawkins replied before Ferns kicked a ninth wide – to finish with a costly six more than the victors.
St. Patrick’s made a dream start while backed by the strong wind, as midfielder John Doyle found Thomas Morris in the left corner.
Morris lofted a shot towards the goalmouth, and Ashley Tully rushed in from the right to poke home after only ten seconds.
Paul McDonald quickly tagged on a point, and while Ferns got their hands on a fair amount of ball thereafter, over-elaboration undermined their efforts before a clever quick series of passes between Jonny Dwyer, Derek Thorpe, Patrick Skelton and advanced midfielder Robert Murphy ended with Murphy spotting ‘Ducker’ Hawkins alone on the left to blast to the net in the ninth minute.
But St. Patrick’s dominated for a spell and free-taker Richard Flood posted twice for a 1-3 to 1-0 lead at the first drinks break.
That margin remained at halftime after Ciarán Roberts and Jonny Dwyer points to get Ferns within 1-3 to 1-2 after 25 minutes were negated by two from Niall O’Brien – a free and a tidy finish from play – to make it 1-5 to 1-2 at the interval.
The second-half was a fairly tepid affair, and Ferns continued to struggle to make an impact in the attacking zone despite monopolising the ball.
Indeed, it was truly remarkable that they hadn’t made more inroads than another ‘Ducker’ Hawkins point on 37 minutes before St. Pat’s eased their concerns with a Niall O’Brien response a minute later (1-6 to 1-3).
Hawkins converted a free on 43 minutes. But Ferns kicked their sixth wide before tenacious St. Patrick’s restored a three-point gap at the last hydration break on 47 minutes with a free from Richard Flood after a foul on the influential Niall O’Brien (1-7 to 1-4).
Ferns really knuckled down during the closing quarter, and substitute Willie Bolger fed midfielder Peter O’Toole to launch a superb point from 55 yards shortly before ‘Ducker’ Hawkins set up Bolger to cut the gap to 1-7 to 1-6 after 54 minutes.
A subsequent free from Hawkins was collected by the ‘keeper before Ferns kicked their seventh and eighth wides as they desperately tried to rescue the tie.
St. Patrick’s eventually lifted the siege when wing-backs Ian Maguire and Daryl Murphy set in motion the move which led to Tomás Dunne being fouled at the expense of a decisive free from Richard Flood four minutes into injury time.
‘Ducker’ Hawkins kept Ferns’ fight on track with a point, but a ninth wide three minutes later spelled the end of their bid for District honours, although both sides still advance to the county quarter-finals.
