U21 Football Championship 2012
August 21: St. Anne's 5-6, Ferns St. Aidan's 1-12
St. Anne’s made good use of the wind in the first-half and left home team Ferns St. Aidan’s with too much to do in this Under-21 football Premier championship preliminary round game on Tuesday last, setting up a quarter-final against Sarsfields.
The visitors were on top from the off and had three points on the board already when Diarmuid O’Keeffe availed of a slack kick-out to rattle the net in the eighth minute after exchanging passes with Liam Rochford.
Diarmuid Kelly added the second goal from the penalty spot after Rochford was impeded, and it was 2-4 to nil before Ferns finally got off the mark through Frankie Devereux early in the second quarter.
While they added two more points from Patrick Breen and Ian Byrne, St. Anne’s went on to lead by 3-4 to 0-3 at the break after Liam Og McGovern latched on to a kick-out and powered through to find the net.
Ferns resumed brightly with three points, but St. Anne’s always kept them at arm’s length and had their fourth goal from substitute Lee Jordan in the 37th minute (4-5 to 0-6). A foul on Conor Kavanagh enabled Diarmuid Kelly to make it 5-5 to 0-8 from another spot kick midway through the half, and it mattered little that the leaders added just one further point although last year’s Roinn 1 winners did narrow the gap, with Patrick Breen netting from a penalty.
Ballinastragh Gaels received a walkover from St. Martin’s in the other preliminary round tie.
