U19 Hurling Championship 2022
July 6: Ferns St. Aidans 4-18, HWH-Bunclody 4-18
OISÍN Ó Ceallaigh pointed an injury-time equaliser for HWH-Bunclody in Wednesday’s fascinating opening round Panda Under-19 hurling Division 1 championship duel with Ferns St. Aidans.
The home side threatened to steal a serious march after bursting clear by 3-3 to 0-6 after 20 minutes.
Wind-assisted Ferns, backboned by their reigning Wexford People Under-17 hurling Roinn 1 champions, edged ahead by 0-4 to 0-3 before Darragh Farrell blasted HWH-Bunclody’s first goal in the 14th minute.
And Oisín Ó Ceallaigh latched onto a mishit shot to net a 2-3 to 0-6 lead after 18 minutes, while he made further hay two minutes later to open up that double-scores 3-3 to 0-6 advantage.
But Ferns closed to within 3-3 to 1-6 after 24 minutes when county Minor, Charlie Roark, emerged from centre-back to get on the end of a line ball from captain Corey Byrne-Dunbar and rattle home the first of his two goals.
Ferns were boosted further on 27 minutes when a somewhat mishit free from Byrne-Dunbar was fumbled to the net as they reasserted by 2-10 to 3-3 at the change of ends.
The twists and turns were unending as HWH-Bunclody edged back in front by 3-11 to 2-13 before Ferns kept the drama mounting when again turning the tables as a pointing effort from James Kinsella ended up in the net (3-13 to 3-11).
HWH-Bunclody regained the upper hand by 3-16 to 3-14 before Ferns landed a contentious goal, with Corey Byrne-Dunbar launching a free into the air from where Charlie Roark smashed home.
And that transformed matters by 4-14 to 3-16 after the referee had clarified the matter after consultation with his umpires.
But Jimmy Connors brought HWH-Bunclody back on terms on 4-16 apiece when goaling from a tight angle in the 55th minute, and while Ferns twice edged back in front, Oisín Ó Ceallaigh ultimately came to the rescue for the hosts.

July 13: Rapparees 4-15, Ferns St. Aidans 3-12
HOME SIDE Ferns St. Aidans sacrificed their supreme attacking talent to defensive duties in Wednesday’s second-round Panda Under-19 hurling Division 1 championship game against Rapparees.
Despite carrying the number 14 on his back, Corey Byrne-Dunbar pitched up at centre-back from the get-go as number six Charlie Roark operated from full-forward.
County Minor Roark is no stranger to that role having hurled from there in Ferns’ acquisition of the Wexford People Under-17 Roinn 1 crown last year, and all bar Josh Kinsella and Byrne-Dunbar were involved in that successful campaign.
Despite Byrne-Dunbar’s principle marking duties on his Wexford Senior colleague Oisín Pepper, the Ferns ace still helped himself to 3-7, although all but a point of this came from frees.
And the tactic appeared questionable after Rapparees burst into a 2-0 to 0-1 lead inside seven minutes.
An Oisín Pepper delivery yielded the first major as full-forward Jamie Donnelly collected in between two Ferns men and wriggled free to finish in the fifth minute. Byrne-Dunbar responded with a pointed free shortly before Pepper got the better of him when latching onto a delivery from Niall Kehoe to net.
Regardless of that profitable Rapparees opening, the Ferns management didn’t budge from where they sited their talisman.
And that remained the case when, just as Ferns closed to within 2-2 to 0-7 on 23 minutes, Jordan Murphy pointed for the Rapps before Jamie Pepper goaled for a 3-3 to 0-7 advantage on 24 minutes after the netminder had partially thwarted an initial threat.
But the Joe Canning-esque shooting majesty of Byrne-Dunbar actually turned the game on its head by 2-9 to 3-5 at half-time after he powered home two close-range frees.
Both were after fouls on Roark, the second of which had his management crying for a penalty – with Byrne-Dunbar practically reducing it to such with an unstoppable conversion.
A trio of Oisín Pepper scores helped Rapparees quickly reassert by 3-9 to 2-9 before a free from his own half by Byrne-Dunbar landed in the net to balance the books for the first time after 40 minutes.
The response was crucial, as Jordan Murphy pointed before Oisín Pepper got on the end of a Bill Peare delivery to dash in from the right wing and lash to the net (4-10 to 3-9).
Rapparees saw it out from there, with their ’keeper Regan Treacy and defender Jack Whitley combining to keep out another worm-burner from a free by Byrne-Dunbar as the Enniscorthy lads sealed their place in the Division 1 final. Blackwater (two points) now face Ferns (one) this evening (Wednesday) to see who joins them.
Ferns St. Aidans: Max Meegan; Jack Curran, Danny Dreelan, Charlie Murphy; Jerry Sheridan, Corey Byrne-Dunbar (capt., 3-7, 3-6 frees), Seán Gahan; James Kinsella (0-1), Liam Byrne; Craig Dreelan, Niall Logan (0-1), Lukas Kinsella; Josh Kinsella (0-1), Charlie Roark (0-1), Oisín Cronin (0-1). Subs. – Jack Byrne for Cronin (HT), Cronin for Roark, inj. (35).
Rapparees: Regan Treacy; Dylan O’Brien, Brian Cronin, Adam Shiggins; Jack Whitley (0-1), Bill Peare, Tom Cash; Jack Byrne (0-2), Billy Redmond; Jamie Pepper (1-0), Oisín Pepper (capt., 2-7, 0-4 frees), Niall Kehoe; Jordan Murphy (0-5), Jamie Donnelly (1-0), Riley Doran. Subs. – Cian O’Connor for Doran (46), Jamie Dugdale for Kehoe (60+6), Fionn O’Reilly for O’Brien (60+7).
Referee: Jamie Farrell (HWH-Bunclody).
July 20: Blackwater 4-22, Ferns St. Aidans 0-12
BLACKWATER WILL have another shot at Rapparees in the Panda Under-19 hurling Division 1 championship final on August 3 after putting an understrength Ferns St. Aidans side to the sword on Wednesday.
The game was over as a contest at half-time, with the hosts leading by 3-15 to 0-2, and it was simply a case of going through the motions after the interval.
They are sure to face a much sterner test when they re-acquaint themselves with the Enniscorthy outfit in the decider but, despite having lost their group meeting by four points, on this evidence they will fancy their chances of reversing the form.
It didn’t take the hosts long to stamp their authority on the contest, with Brian Óg Curran doing the needful from placed balls and Alan and Aidan Malanowski and Ollie Murphy all slotting over eye-catching points as they raced into an 0-8 to 0-2 lead in the opening quarter.
With 15 minutes on the clock they pounced for the opening goal when a Seamus Walsh delivery bounced kindly into the path of Adam Cullen, and he kept his cool to fire to the net.
Four minutes later they had their second major as a Ciarán Cash ball into the danger zone wasn’t dealt with and Brian Óg Curran applied the finish.
The green flag was waving again in the 24th minute when Jay Mooney picked up possession, side-stepped a defender and unleashed a blistering shot into the roof of the net.
After James Murray of Ferns had opened the second-half scoring with a free, Blackwater put the foot down again, scoring six points on the trot through Alan Malanowski, Ciarán Cash, Joseph Rossiter, Adam Cullen and Brian Óg Curran (two) to lead by 3-21 to 0-3 by the 40th minute.
Ferns then enjoyed a purple patch, outscoring their opponents by eight points to one in a 15-minute spell, with Brian Stafford, James Kinsella, James Murray and Jack Brennan on target.
However, Blackwater rubberstamped their victory in the 58th minute when substitute Ronan Malanowski fired the ball to the net, and they can now look forward to another meeting with Rapparees in the final on Wednesday of next week in St. Patrick’s Park, Enniscorthy.
Ferns St. Aidans: Oisín Cronin; Charlie Murphy, Danny Dreelan, Jerry Sheridan; Max Meegan, James Murray (0-2, 1 free), Seán Gahan; George Warren, James Kinsella (0-4); Lucas Kinsella, Stephen O’Toole, Jack Brennan (0-1); Matthew Hanley, Brian Stafford (capt., 0-5 frees), Craig Dreelan. Subs. - Josh Kinsella for Warren, inj. (30+1), Jack Curran for Hanley (HT), Jack Byrne for L. Kinsella (HT), Matthew Hanley for C. Dreelan, inj. (46).
Blackwater: Barry Whelan; Callum Mooney, Jason Wallace, Rian Sammon; Seamus Walsh, Eugene Clarke, Ciarán Cash (0-2); Ollie Murphy (capt., 0-3, 1 free), Aidan Malanowski (0-2); Jimmy Whelan (0-1), Alan Malanowski (0-3), Joseph Rossiter (0-1); Jay Mooney (1-0), Brian Óg Curran (1-8, 0-7 frees), Adam Cullen (1-2). Subs. - Ultan O’Reilly for Murphy (HT), Odie Carroll for Rossiter (39), Seán O’Brien for C. Mooney (39), Ronan Malanowski (1-0) for J. Mooney, inj. (47), Tristan Cash for Curran (49).

July 27, Shield Final: Ferns St. Aidans 0-20, HWH-Bunclody 2-13
A stunning second half comeback crowned by a dramatic injury time winner saw Ferns St. Aidans claim the inaugural Panda U19 Hurling Division 1 Shield title in Bunclody on Wednesday evening, when beating the hosts by the bare minimum.
The home side were in a strong position at the break as they led by 2-9 to 0-7, but the young Ferns men found something extra at the break as they picked off points from all angles en route to victory. They also had a number of goal chances, but a combination of poor luck and some great saves by Bunclody ‘keeper Aaron Whiting kept them at bay.
The opening quarter of the game was close enough, with the hosts leading by 0-4 to 0-3 at that stage, but they then shot three points in a row before Jimmy O’Connor had their first goal on 23 minutes. He was first to a long dropping ball, and his shot was low and hard to the corner of the net.
Paddy and Desmond O’Connor added points while Jack Brennan and Corey Byrne Dunbar kept Ferns in touch, but then ‘The Halfway’ had their second goal bang on the stroke of half time. Again, it was one of their men who was quickest to a dropping ball, as this time it was Sam Black who did the honours from close range.
Ferns shot three points in the first three minutes of the second half (Stephen O’Toole, and two from Byrne Dunbar), to give the first signal of a possible comeback, but when Paddy O’Connor replied for the hosts, there were still two clear goals between the sides on 40 minutes (2-10 to 0-10).
Ferns worked their way into that lead over the next 15 minutes, with Byrne Dunbar in particular in fine form. However, they never got any closer than two points during that time, and in fact they trailed by three (2-13 to 0-16) with just two minutes of regulation time left.
There was a rousing finish from them though, as first Conor O’Toole scored two points within 30 seconds of each other, after working hard for the first and then shooting the second from long range.
The equaliser came when Corey Byrne Dunbar pointed a free he earned himself, and the injury time winner was a great long-range effort from Stephen O’Toole, with 32 minutes on the clock.
Bunclody did manage to launch one last attack but some stout Ferns defending meant they didn’t manage a scoring attempt, and the final whistle blew as the ball was cleared back down the field.
Ferns St. Aidans: Lukas Kinsella; Sean Gahan, Charlie Murphy, Jerry Sheridan; Danny Dreelan, Conor O’Toole (0-2), Max Meegan; Liam Byrne (0-1), Brian Stafford (0-1); Jack Brennan (0-1), Corey Byrne Dunbar (0-10, 5f), James Kinsella (0-1); Niall Logan (0-1), James Murray, Stephen O’Toole (0-3). Subs: George Warren for Meegan (half time); Craig Dreelan for Brennan (44 mins); Jack Curran for Sheridan (49 mins).
HWH-Bunclody: Aaron Whiting (0-3f); Sam Lonergan, Ciarán Whiting, Faoláin O’Ceallaigh; Matthew Tully, Thomas Cowman, Eoin McDonnell; Rory Raleigh, Conor Burke; Larry O’Connor, Desmond O’Connor (0-4, 2f), Paddy O’Connor (0-2); Jimmy O’Connor (1-2), Sam Black (1-0), Mylie O’Connor (0-1). Subs: Ryan Kavanagh for Mylie O’Connor (48 mins), Paddy Scott for Black (55 mins).
