Junior Hurling Championship 2011
April 25: Geraldine O'Hanrahans 3-10, Ferns St. Aidans 3-9
GERALDINE O'HANRAHANS almost saw their eight-point lead completely gobbled up before time ran out on Ferns St. Aidans in this battle of the second strings in the County Junior Hurling Championship Group C opener at Coolree.
Goals dominated the first quarter, with one from the Gers' Paul Cassin being sandwiched by similar scores from the Ferns pair of Anthony Dwyer and John O'Leary. However, the winners' greater accuracy saw them lead 1-4 to 2-0 after that burst as Ferns wasted good chances, and they still trailed at the break by 2-2 to 1-6.
The Gers surged ahead by 3-6 to 2-4 after 36 minutes with two goals from Jimmy Smith (free) and sub Mikey Wall, and the New Ross lads pushed clear by eight points entering the final quarter. Ferns then produced a battling effort, and Dickie Redmond goaled to help cut the gap to four points before Gers had a man sent off. Ferns mustered three more points, but they fell just shy of bridging the gap.

August 7: Crossabeg/Ballymurn 2-14, Ferns St. Aidans 0-8
Late goals from the Murphy brothers, John and Barry, swept Crossabeg/Ballymurn to victory and a place in the quarter-finals of the county Junior Hurling Championship after finishing their Group C campaign when overcoming the Ferns second string in Oulart
It was a dour affair for much of the way, and Ballymurn had five points on the scoresheet before Ferns got their first score after twelve minutes. Five successful strikes by Barry Murphy (four frees) contributed to the winners leading 0-8 to 0-5 at half-time.
The game remained tight entering the closing stages, with Ballymurn leading by 0-12 to 0-8. But, after a mass melee, they achieved a big breakthrough on 50 minutes, when Billy Roche found John Murphy, who netted from the edge of the square. Ballymurn tagged on a point before John Murphy turned provider for his younger brother Barry to seal it with a 57th minute goal, prior to Michael Doyle tagging on an insurance point.
There was some consolation for Ferns though in that they are through to the quarter finals on the basis of a superior score difference to Duffry Rovers and Geraldine O'Hanrahans.
